The Guest Writer Blog Series is a weekly portion of the Central Blog. Each month we get insight from those in the company about events, experiences, food and more.  Continuing on from August into September, we continue to look into our staff’s memorable or extraordinary dining experiences from around the country.

Don Rush, who works in Central’s warehouse, visited The Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach, Virginia this past July while visiting his son.  He has been going there for the past three years and enjoys the food and entertaining atmosphere.

“The food is really good,” Rush said. “There are a lot of neat posters of different bands and signatures.”

The Jewish Mother was established in 1975 and is described as the Home of the East Coast Blues.

The restaurant was created after the three original partners decided Virginia was in need of a deli restaurant to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner that would double as a lounge for after hours to include a stage for live entertainment. Their website follows up by saying they became a full service restaurant and can seat around 200 guests.

The name “The Jewish Mother” originated from partner Jeffery Segal’s mother, Mrs. Segal, who was Jewish and played a huge role in adding variety of choices to their menu. Her name became the standard. When browsing through the menu, you will find several entrees or pieces of information that begin with “Mother’s” or “Mom’s.”

Their diverse menu is made up of breakfast items, fresh salad platters, soups and noshes, pitas and sandwiches, dinner items, desserts and beverages.

“We went for breakfast,” Rush said about his most recent visit. He ordered a low calorie veggie wrap and said they have many healthy items on their menu. Rush described the average price for an entrée around $10 per person.

Many famous music artists have played and ate at The Jewish Mother such as Dave Matthews, Hootie and the Blowfish, Jack Cassidy, Keller Williams and Ice Cube.

The Jewish Mother posts a schedule and ticket information for entertainment on their website.  Upcoming events for early September include Bobby Blackhat Band with a special guest on September 11, Robin Welch on September 12 and Mambo Sauce on September 18.

The Food Network featured “The Jewish Mother” and Hampton Roads magazine rated them in the top 50 restaurants in the seven-city area that is known as “Hampton Roads.”

When browsing their website, you can find “Mom’s Dictionary” which features definitions for menu items and other terminology.
