Wrought Iron Furniture: How to Keep it Rust-Free

Iron outdoor furniture is very popular but can be high maintenance if not cared for properly.  Iron rusts easily and often needs rust-resistant paint reapplied. This is not an easy task, but with the following tips and a little bit of elbow grease, you can keep your furniture looking brand new.

        • First, you must remove any rust that has built up on the furniture and any chipping paint. You will need a wire brush and sandpaper for this step. Before moving on, make sure all the rust has been removed.
        • After the piece is rust- and paint-free, clean it with a mild dish soap.
        • Rinse the dish soap off and dry the furniture.
        • Apply your new coat of rust-resistant paint (consider Rust-Oleum).

Continue to monitor your iron furniture.  If the paint begins to chip away again, plan an outdoor furniture maintenance day.  The timeline for this depends on the weather the furniture endures on a daily basis. The more wet your weather atmosphere is, the more often you will have to repeat this process.
