It’s State Fair Season

Midway rides, animals, attractions–it’s that time of year again, time for the state fair.

For the most part, state fair season in the United States typically begins in July and runs through October. In addition to the rides and attractions, one of the biggest aspects of a state fair is the food.

Some menu items are a staple and remain consistent from year to year (such as elephant ears or deep fried corn dogs), but the real news-makers are the crazy new ideas and concoctions.  Each year, state fairs debut something even crazier than the year before.

Central’s Week in Brief: July 29, 2011

Every Friday Central brings you stories from the week that you might have missed, but that are definitely worth a look. We’ll feature food news covering everything from the weird to the wonderful in the world of restaurants, schools, the military and more.  It’s our way to help you go into the weekend with a little extra knowledge and maybe even a project or recipe to try out!

appleslices, image from morguefile1)      This week, McDonald’s pledged to give a face-lift to the nutritional value of their classic happy meal.  Changes include providing both apple slices AND fries (each in smaller portions), eliminating the carmel dipping sauce now available for apples and offering fat-free chocolate or low-fat regular milk instead of just soda.  The New York Times reports that these changes will begin this September and should be in all stores by April, 2012.

2)      While the U.S. is trying to fight back against obesity, a severe famine is taking place in Somalia.  The World Food Program will airlift about 10 tons of food to aid in the issue which will feed about 3,500 for a month, according to NPR.   To donate to the efforts, visit the World Food Program’s website.  

3)      Football fans and sports restaurants/bars can now rest a little easier.  It was announced on Monday that the NFL season will go on as planned this year.  This means business will hopefully be booming for places like Dominos, Pizza Hut and Buffalo Wild Wings who all see a spike in sales on game days.  In fact, Market Watch reports that Pizza Hut “typically sells 1.5 million pizzas on an NFL Sunday, which is a 15%-to-25% increase over a typical Sunday.

4)      Kentucky Fried Chicken is taking an aerial approach to get the word out about their restaurant.  If you happen to be flying over Rachel, Nevada in the near future, you may look down to see a giant version of Colonel Sanders staring back up at you.  While creative (and gigantic), this type of marketing is really nothing new.  According to an article on Yahoo, “It’s a tradition that stretches back to 1965, when the Readymix company plastered its moniker on a desert in Australia.”

5)     In 1984, President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month.   With the current heat wave passing through most of the country and the month coming to an end, it couldn’t be a more perfect time to enjoy this ice cold treat.  You could go with the usual vanilla or chocolate, but if you’re one for adventure, the San Francisco Weekly has a list of the Top 10 Weirdest Ice Cream Flavors in Existence that’s just for you.  What’s wrong with a little candied bacon treat to cool you down?
