Central Holds Annual 10/10 Day Celebration

Every October 10 (or next closest day if it falls on a weekend), Central celebrates 10/10 Day.

The event originates from our old location at 1010 Central Ave. in Indianapolis, when our previous owners wanted a company-wide event for employees to have lunch, play games and enjoy some time out of the office to get to know other employees.

10/10 Day has been taking place just over 10 years.  It took a few years off after the move to our new building at 79th and Georgetown Road in 2005 and was brought back last year by Sheila Greenwald from the Payroll and Benefits department and also a member of Central’s 20 Year Club.

While many places around the country have cooled off and Fall is in full swing, this year’s event (in Indianapolis), had temperatures in the high 70s and the sun was shining.

Prior to events kicking off, everyone gathered in their Central attire to our dock area for a group photo followed by lunch from Jugs Catering.  Employees enjoyed fried chicken, pulled pork, vegetable lasagna, pasta salad, fried biscuits and potatoes, along with a few other items.  For dessert, an ice cream station was set up with a plethora of options.

10/10 Day is never complete without the games.  This year employees played the traditional games: Cornhole, M&M Spitting, Bingo, Tug of War and Three-Way Tug of War.  Then “Minute to Win It” games were introduced this year which included Office Tennis, Speed Eraser and the very challenging, High Roller.  (Click the links to view videos from the actual show).

The day wrapped up with a few thank-yous and an awards ceremony, then it was back to business as usual. 10/10 Day is a great event for Central to get out of the day-to-day routine for a few hours and celebrate our 30 years in the business.

If your company has a similar event, please share how you celebrate your company or restaurant!

Central’s Founders Day Celebration

Last Friday, October 8, Central celebrated our Founders Day event which is a fun filled afternoon of food and games.

The name Founders Day originates from an event from our previous location, 1010 Central Ave. in downtown Indianapolis.  It was known as 10/10 Day.   We have since moved to the northwest side of the city and have brought back the event—renaming it to Founders Day.

The weather could not have been more perfect at 80°F and sunny—not a cloud in the sky.  The warmer-than-usual weather definitely worked out to our benefit for the outdoor festivities.

Lunch was served at 12 p.m. in our Warehouse by Jugs Catering.

Employees enjoyed fried biscuits with apple butter, pasta salad, green beans, cheesy au gratin potatoes, fried chicken and veggie lasagna—with cookies for dessert.

Door prizes were distributed toward the end of the lunch and games followed shortly after from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Employees played the traditional games from previous Founders Day celebrations (Bingo, M&M spitting, Cornhole, Football Toss and Tug-O-War).

The crowd heavily gathered around the dock area for the M&M spitting contest.  Staff Accountant, Matt Patrick, won the first round (42”) and National Accounts Sales Manager, Scott Ebbert, won the second round (43”). Totals include rolling.

After the M&M spitting contest, the crowd moved to watch the Cornhole Tournament and Football Toss.

After several rounds of Cornhole, Product Consultants Steffan Lawler and Scott Reynolds took first place.  Matt White, customer care specialist, and Harold Lloyd, maintenance, took second.

Product Consultant Rryan Christmas was crowned winner of the Football Toss and the day concluded with a game of Tug-O-War.

Everyone crowded around the two teams then was suddenly surprised as Director of Logistics, Dave Delp, pulled up his truck to help his team be victorious.

They attached the ends of the rope to the truck and were ready to start pulling. The other team, while defeated by the truck, gave it their best shot. After the truck’s victory, the ropes were removed and the real game began.  The team without the truck was crowned winner. (Team included: Scott Ebbert, Jeff Niewiadomski, Kelly Hinds, Mike Kern, John Fischer and Greg Seigel).

Overall, Founders Day was a great break from the normal work day for Central employees to get together and enjoy the nice weather.  For next year’s Founders Day, it is hoped to add a three-legged race, water balloon toss, relay race and two person tug-o-war to the agenda.

Central’s Annual Company Picnic

Central Restaurant Products held its annual company picnic for employees and their families Saturday August 14 beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Broad Ripple Park in Indianapolis.

Games and prizes were available for employees and children enjoyed a bounce house from Party Time Rental and gift bags. Despite the incredibly hot and humid weather, the turnout was normal.

“About 124, ” Kerrie Lafky, HR director, said. “Same as years past.”

The picnic began with bingo followed by the Cornhole tournament at 12 p.m. First place winners were Harold Lloyd, maintenance, and Mike Mayberry, warehouse associate. Steve Myers, product consultant, and his son Alex took second place.

Lunch was served at 1 p.m by Jugs Catering.  The menu consisted of pulled pork, fried chicken, green beans, au gratin potatoes, fried biscuits with apple butter, fresh fruit salad, cookies, lemonade and soda.

The heat played a huge role in the day’s festivities.

“Weather was very hot. Too hot. Africa hot,” Myers described. However to beat the heat, he and other employees were able to go under shelter, drink water and use mini fans provided by Central. “Thanks for the mini fans, they helped some.”

Despite the heat, employees and their families enjoyed the event.

“It was fun to talk to other employees in a less formal setting and meet the people that are important in their lives.” Tim Huggins, freight analyst, said.

Central employees Nick Wallpe, Sharron Ransom and Danielle Deppert.

A generous amount of door prizes were given. The door prizes were: (3) $25 gas cards, Kodak PlaySport (Zx3) HD waterproof pocket video camera, iPod nano 8 (8 GB), iPod shuffle (4 GB), Canon PIXMA MX340 Wireless Office All-in-One Printer as well as many restaurant gift cards and other miscellaneous items.

IT Director, Joe Haigerty, said he thought most everyone was able to win something.

A date for next year’s company picnic has not yet been set.
